Madagascar is considered by many to be the world’s best region for growing high quality vanilla. It is known for producing Planifolia or Bourbon vanilla, exported across the globe. This small island on the eastern coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean, provides ideal conditions for the vanilla orchid to grow and be cultivated. Madagascan vanilla is hand-pollinated, thanks to numerous passionate and dedicated local farmers. These farmers have extensive knowledge of the vanilla plant which they pass along from generation to generation. They cultivate high quality vanilla with very high concentrations of vanillin. This has enabled Madagascar to become the leading country in the vanilla bean industry.
When one thinks of agricultural products from Indonesia, an image of the beautiful rice terraces & tea plantations comes to mind. Not everybody knows that the great archipelago of Indonesia also has an important market share in global vanilla exportations. Its vanilla cultivation area expanded widely throughout the islands, despite the sometimes damaging weather conditions. As the second highest exporting country in vanilla pods, after Madagascar, Indonesian vanilla is preferred by many for its unique flavor profile. There are two different vanilla varieties grown in Indonesia (Planifolia and Tahitensis). Each of these varieties has a unique, complex but balanced flavor profile, ensuring great results in various preparations.
The distinctive landform of Uganda makes its agricultural produce notable across the globe. Uganda is a landlocked country in Central East Africa, surrounded by lakes & mountains, with a particular topography that allows farmers to cultivate many different products. Vanilla is one of them, and, unlike other production locations in the world, Ugandan vanilla can be harvested twice a year. Ugandan natural vanilla has a great flavor power and a particular profile, with an exceptional scent, making it a valuable ingredient of choice for many preparations.
