Located in central eastern Africa, bordered by Kenya, DRC, Tanzania and South Sudan, Uganda is a landlocked country of diverse landscapes and lakes. Although Uganda is exactly at equator level, its climate is warm rather than hot and its temperature difference throughout the year is not significant. Uganda has a particular landform consisting of a wide plateau ranging from 800m to 2000m above sea level and is surrounded by lakes and mountains in the south west of the country. Uganda’s agriculture is divided into many crops including coffee, tea, cotton, tobacco and grains. In the late 1990’s, local farmers started to develop Uganda’s horticultural agriculture with chilies, vanilla and asparagus, thanks to the rich soil of the country and its moderate weather.
In fact, vanilla production in Uganda is the third largest in Africa, placing Uganda as one of the top vanilla exporting countries of the continent. Ugandan vanilla is exported mainly to the United States and Europe, in the form of beans, vanilla powder, vanilla seeds and vanilla extracts. In Uganda, like other sourcing countries in which De Monchy Natural Products is present, we continue to build a fair and symbiotic relationship with vanilla producers as we did from the start of our vanilla business. We cultivate this rapport through programs that support the planet, our people and our products.
Uganda is a country in which agriculture and exportation of raw materials play an important role in the local economy. The country’s large and diverse agricultural product portfolio, is due to the unique draining ability of the three lakes surrounding most of the country’s large plateau. Over the years the country’s vanilla exportations have been increasing. Unlike other vanilla growing regions, Uganda’s climate and weather patterns allows the farmer to harvest vanilla twice per year, once in December and once during June-July.
Even though there are vanilla-pollinating bees living in Uganda, the vanilla orchid flowers still needs to be hand-pollinated by the local farmers to insure a maximum yield. The taste of Ugandan vanilla beans is creamy and slightly sweet. It offers strong scents of rich, buttery vanilla notes, with a bold and earthy taste in addition to hints of raisin and fig. Ugandan vanilla goes well with chocolate-based desserts, balancing its strong flavors.
